Frequently asked questions
About motor insurance, non-motor cover, and medical cover — and how working with Cush actually works.
General
How working with Cush actually works.
Is Cush tied to one insurance company?
No. We're an independent agency and compare cover across 29 vetted underwriting partners, so our advice is based on what fits you — not a single provider.
How do I get a quote?
Request a quote through our client portal, on WhatsApp, by phone, or at any branch. There's no obligation, and an advisor compares options from trusted underwriters to find your best fit.
Can I buy insurance without visiting a branch?
Yes. You can request a quote and buy a policy entirely online — via the client portal, WhatsApp, or USSD. Cover is issued digitally, often the same day.
Can I pay my premium with M-Pesa?
Yes. Premiums can be paid via M-Pesa STK push, so cover starts instantly with nothing to reconcile manually.
What happens when I need to make a claim?
You call your advisor and we manage the claim with your underwriter end-to-end, keeping you updated until it's resolved.
Is Cush Insurance Agency licensed?
Yes. We are a licensed insurance agency in Kenya, registered under the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) — License No. 33184.
What does it cost to use Cush?
Nothing for our advice or quotations — you only pay the premium for the cover you choose. We always show you the exact premium before you commit.
What do I need to take out a policy?
Generally a valid National ID or passport, your KRA PIN, and the details relevant to what you're insuring (for example, a logbook for a car). Your advisor tells you exactly what's needed for your cover.
Can I change or upgrade my cover later?
Yes. If your circumstances change, talk to your advisor — we can adjust your cover, add benefits, or move you to a policy that fits better.
Which branches do you have?
We have offices in Athi River, Kitui. See the Contacts page for addresses, phone lines and opening hours.
How fast will an advisor respond to my message?
Messages via WhatsApp or the contact form are answered within 24 hours on working days. For anything urgent, calling 0728 974 447 is fastest.
Motor Insurance
Comprehensive vs third party, excess, valuation, claims, and driving.
What is Comprehensive cover, and what are the benefits?
Comprehensive is the highest level of motor cover. On top of your third-party liability, it protects your own vehicle against accidental damage, theft, fire, and — where the policy is extended — natural events like floods and storms. It usually also includes windscreen and radio cover and towing/recovery assistance, so a serious incident becomes a manageable claim rather than a large, sudden bill.
What is Third Party (TPO) and what does it cover?
Third Party Only is the legal minimum every vehicle on a Kenyan road must carry. It covers injury, death, or property damage that you cause to other people (third parties). It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle, or theft or fire.
What is excess protection in car insurance?
The excess is the amount you contribute towards an accidental-damage claim — generally 2.5% of the insured value for private vehicles and 5% for commercial and PSV vehicles, subject to the insurer's minimum. An Excess Protector is an optional add-on that waives or refunds that excess on an accidental-damage claim. It is used once per claim and must be reinstated with a premium afterwards, and it does not apply to theft, fire, or Political Violence & Terrorism claims.
When is an inspection (valuation) required?
Most insurers require a full inspection and valuation before they will issue Comprehensive cover, so the sum insured is accurate and any existing damage is recorded. As a rule the vehicle should be valued no more than one month before cover starts. Third-party cover does not require a valuation.
Do the windscreen and radio/cassette carry an excess?
No. Windscreen glass and in-car entertainment equipment are covered up to a set limit (which varies by underwriter) with no excess, no assessment, and no police abstract required — the item is simply replaced. If the value exceeds the free limit, additional cover can be purchased.
What is Political Violence & Terrorism (PVT) cover?
PVT covers loss or damage arising from riots, strikes, civil commotion, war, terrorism, and malicious damage. It is excluded from a standard motor policy unless it is specifically loaded onto your cover. The minimum loading amount varies by underwriter.
Which parts of the car require a 50% client contribution during repairs?
Wear-and-tear parts — such as tyres, brakes, batteries, clutches, and exhaust systems — are typically subject to a 50% client contribution when they are replaced after an accident, because they wear out through normal use rather than the incident itself.
Does insurance cover pre-existing damage and dents?
No. Damage that was present before your policy started is not covered. It must be declared and recorded at the valuation, as it can affect your rates and how a future claim is assessed.
Is the driver covered?
No. Comprehensive cover protects the vehicle and third parties only. Injury to the driver — or to passengers — needs a separate Personal Accident policy.
What is Passenger Legal Liability (PLL)?
PLL is an add-on that extends your motor policy to pay compensation for injuries to fare-paying passengers travelling in your vehicle who are not covered by their own Personal Accident policy. It is an extra loading that must be added to the policy — it is not automatic.
Does insurance cover passengers, and what should I do in case of a claim?
Not automatically — compensation for passengers usually requires Passenger Legal Liability (PLL) to be added, or the passengers to hold their own Personal Accident cover. If there is an incident: make the scene safe, photograph it with all number plates visible, get the other driver's and any witnesses' details, report to the police within 24 hours and get an abstract, then notify Cush or your insurer promptly and submit the claim form with the supporting documents.
Why should you never admit liability after an accident?
Admitting fault at the scene — even informally — can breach a condition of your policy and undermine your insurer's ability to defend the claim, which can reduce or invalidate your payout. Exchange details, cooperate with the police, and let the investigation and the police abstract establish who was at fault.
What do the dashboard warning light symbols mean?
Common ones: the engine-check light (an engine or emissions fault), the oil-pressure light (low oil — stop the engine), the battery/charging light (an electrical fault), the brake warning (handbrake on or low brake fluid), the temperature light (the engine is overheating), and ABS/ESP (a stability-system fault). If a red light comes on, stop safely and call your advisor.
Why should I know the road traffic signs and symbols?
Knowing the signs keeps you safe and helps you avoid accidents, fines, and penalties. Warning signs are usually triangular with a red border; regulatory signs are circular (a red ring means 'must not', a blue disc means 'must do'); information signs are rectangular. Your driving-school course covers the full set.
Medical & Health
Inpatient, outpatient, maternity, dependants, and waiting periods.
What does health insurance cover?
Depending on the plan, cover can include inpatient (hospital admission) treatment, outpatient consultations and tests, maternity, dental and optical care, and emergency treatment. Corporate plans are available for employers.
What's the difference between inpatient and outpatient cover?
Inpatient cover applies when you are admitted to hospital for an overnight stay or longer. Outpatient cover applies to consultations, prescriptions, and tests that do not require admission.
Can I add my family to my policy?
Yes. Most plans let you add your spouse and children as dependants, so the whole family is protected under one policy.
Is there a waiting period?
Many plans apply waiting periods before certain benefits — commonly maternity and pre-existing conditions. Your advisor will confirm the exact waiting periods for the plan you choose.
Non-Motor & Other Cover
Travel, agriculture, and business cover.
What does Travel insurance cover?
Typically emergency medical expenses abroad, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or delayed baggage, flight delays, and emergency evacuation. Ideally buy it as soon as you book your trip so you are covered for events before departure too.
What does Agriculture insurance cover?
We arrange cover for crops against drought, floods, pests, and fire, as well as livestock and farm assets and equipment — including index-based products that pay automatically on a measured weather trigger. It helps farmers and agribusinesses recover from losses that would otherwise wipe out a season.
What non-motor cover do you arrange for businesses?
Business property (fire & burglary), goods in transit, marine, aviation, engineering and construction, workplace injury (WIBA), public and professional liability, money insurance, fidelity guarantee, and bid, performance and advance-payment bonds, among others. Browse the full list under Products.
Do you insure churches, schools and NGOs?
Yes. We arrange fire and burglary, motor, personal accident, and liability cover for churches, schools (private and public), NGOs, and other institutions — often packaged into one arrangement.
